The Macau Pataca is now the legal tender in the Macau Special Administrative Region. The currency is issued by the Bank of China and Banco Nacional Ultramarino respectively. The Bank of China began to issue the Macau currency on October 16, 1995. this was an important event indicating that Macau would return to China in accordance with the Joint Declaration on the Question of Macau bt the Governments of The People's Republic of China and The Republic of Portugal formally signed on April 13, 1987. This is also a milestone of epoch-marking significance in the history of development of Macau's currency.

This booklet consists of two four-in-one uncut sheets in denominations of 10 Macau Patacas, one issued by The Bank of China and the other by the Banco Nacional Ultramarino, and the last four numbers are identical.

These new banknotes are issued in accordance with Administrative Regulation No. 33/2000 promulgated by the Macau Special Administrative Region. The issuance of the notes is limitted to 10,000,000 for each bank while the four-in-one uncut sheets, which are issued for the first time in the region, will number 100,000 only.

The Major Characteristics of the Bank of China 10 Patacas Note

The face side of the notefeatures the Gua Lighthouse. The name of the Bank of China, the number of the order that authorized the issuance of the note, its face value the general manager of the Macau Branch of Bank of China and his signature, the date of issuance, all in Chinese and in Portuguese are depicted at the center. On the upper right corner is the logo of the Bank of China. The number 10 is printed on the other three corners, showing the value of the note. The serial numbers are located on the lower right side as well as on the left side vertically.

The reverse side shows the picture of the headquarter building of the branch of the Bank of China in Macau. Its name, in Chinese and Portuguese, the number 10, a lotus flower set on decorative motifs are at the center. In the bottom is the denomination in Chinese of the 10 Patacas. On the right lower corner of the note and the other two upper corners is printed the value mark.

The Major Characteristics of the Banco Nacional Ultramarino 10 Patacas Note

The face side of the note features the memorial house of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, in Macau, topped by the name "Banco Nacional Ultramarino" in Portuguese and then in Cinese and "Macau". The value mark on upper right and lower left corners is numerical, while in the other two corners it is given in Chinese. The note's face value both in Chinese and Portuguese are below followed by the date of issuance and the signatures of one board member of the bank, with his title, as well as the signature f the general manager of the Macau branch. The serial numbers are located on the upper right side as well as on the lower left side. THe log of the bank is shown in the center of the bottom part.

The reverse side shows the picture of the Macau-Taipa Bridge, with a view of the Praia Grande Bay, framed by the name "Banco Nacional Ultramarino" on the top, and the face value in Portuguese at the bottom. The value mark on the upper right and lower let corners is numerical, while in th eother two corners it is given in Chinese. In the middle of the left handside the logo of the BNU is depicted.
